Participatory Approaches for Building Environmental Consciousness- Case of GIDC industrial estate, Vapi

June, 2016 Vapi

Participatory approaches for building environmental consciousness were successfully demonstrated in GIDC Industrial Estate, Vapi on 5th June 2016 on the occasion of the World Environment Day. The event ‘Streets for All’ was chosen to demonstrate that the function of streets in industrial areas go beyond road transportation. The event brought together people of all age groups engaging in sports, health and art activities aimed at raising environmental awareness. Interaction Meets between environmental experts and entrepreneurs were organised to generate awareness amongst the industries and their employees. Stakeholders from local communities, industries, NGOs and media, amongst others participated. Their enthusiasm highlights the importance and awareness towards environmental concerns.

The event literally transformed the look of the street in the industrial park where it was taking place presenting a stark contrast to the otherwise critically polluted area suffering from bad public image. Around 450 people signed the pledge for the environmental awareness campaign to initiate efforts towards the protection of the environment. As per local media reports, more than 6,000 people participated in this event.

The interest towards conducting such participatory events has been rising in Vapi over the past few years. It is foreseen that this approach will further strengthen the efforts by different organisations and generate interest towards environmental protection.
